Haj Amin Al Husseini, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, founder and leader of the Arab Higher Committee, called upon Palestinians to kill the Jews as early as 1929, fomenting the Hebron massacre and ethnic cleansing of the city's ancient Jewish community, as well as inciting attacks on Jews throughout the Mandate. He was sought after by British authorities for these and other crimes, but he escaped, turning up later as an honoured guest and associate of Adolph Hitler in Berlin. During the war, he helped to raise and organize a Muslim SS brigade in Bosnia.
On 1 March 1944, in a radio broadcast to the Arab people from Berlin, the Mufti stated: "Arabs! Rise as one and fight for your sacred rights. Kill the Jews wherever you find them. This pleases God, history, and religion. This saves your honor."
Husseini, declared a war criminal at Nuremberg and sought by Yugoslavia after the war, fled to Egypt where he spent the rest of his life. He died in 1974, contributing to a network of espionage, sabotage, and anti-Jewish propaganda that involved many former Nazis and Nazi sympathizers. In his memoirs, he wrote, "Our fundamental condition for cooperating with Germany was a free hand to eradicate every last Jew from Palestine and the Arab world. I asked Hitler for an explicit undertaking to allow us to solve the Jewish problem in a manner befitting our national and racial aspirations and according to the scientific methods innovated by Germany in the handling of its Jews. The answer I got was: 'The Jews are yours.'"
