La première question que Kesi a posée à Gautam était pourquoi Mahavira a-t-il insisté sur le respect de cinq vœux alors que Parashvanath n'a pas mentionné cinq mais seulement quatre, à l'exclusion du célibat? Mais la question aurait eu un sens s'il pouvait être démontré que le salut pouvait être obtenu sans l'observation du célibat. Pour autant que je comprends les livres Swetambara eux-mêmes insistent sur le respect de ce vœu, et il n'est pas possible que deux enseignants omniscients, i. e., Parashvanath et Mahavira pourraient enseigner différentes choses.
The first question Kesi put to Gautam was why did Mahavira insist upon the observance of five vows when Parashvanath did not mention five but only four, excluding celibacy? But the question would have had a point if it could be shown that salvation could be obtained without the observance of celibacy. So far as I understand Swetambara books themselves insist upon an observance of this vow, and it is not possible that two omniscient teachers, i. e., Parashvanath and Mahavira could teach different things.
